Log Home History is crucial to understanding where the love for log homes comes from and continues today.

The History of Log Homes started back many centuries ago. They have been refered to as log cabins and/or log homes. The log home originated in Scandinavia, Russia and Eastern Europe. In the early 1700's the log home concept was brought to the "New World" (North America) by the Scandinavian settlers.

The Colonists and Native Americans of that time rapidly began using this building technique. There was ample resources available and it provided for a strong and reliable home.

The earliest of log homes were built by hand or as we call it today, "Handcrafted." In using this building techinique the trees were cut from the forests. They were then stacked on top of one another in order to create the walls of the home. They were either left with bark on or peeled off.

Some of the homes were created using a technique called "scribing" where each log was traced and cut to match the log below it. An axe or adze was the typical tool of choice.

Other log homes were created using a technique called, "chinking" where the logs are stacked and then the gaps are filled with mud and leaves or anything they could get there hands on. This type of building worked very well and gave the homeowner/builder great pride. Today, much of the same building techniques are still being used, but they have made considerable improvements in the materials used for "chinking" since the early 1700's!

Log Home History changes during the 1920's. The manufactured or milled log homes began to appear. The industrial age had taken hold of the log home industry!

Manufactured log homes have become more and more popular since the 1920's. Mainly because people all over the world enjoy the idea of a log home and everything it represents. Also, the demand has continually increased throughout the years and the ability to built their own home has decreased.

The benefits of a manufactured log home allow you to choose from a variety of profiles and a variety of sizes. Profiles range from being round, to flat, to "D" shaped. Sizes vary from 4" and higher. In the case of the handcrafted log home, profiles and size are usually limited to the characteristics of the log being used. The history of log homes has definitely come a long way in comparison to the original log homes built in the early 1700's.

Today, people enjoy both the manufactered log home and the handcrafted log home.

Some people choose between the two based on their budget but no matter what, every log home lover believes in the ideals of a log home. Most enjoy nature and the peacefulness of the outdoors. They are searching and striving to become one with nature and get away from the hustle and bustle of the city life.

The history of log homes is what draws everyone to them. There have been many improvements within the industry, but many of the same techniques being used today were also used centuries ago.
